The tasks designed into experiential learning events of this nature are not always easy to unravel and success is never certain. Groups that fail to capitalise on an experiential learning event do so for the same reasons that many organisations fail, for example, poor management of resources and people. On one hand, this tends to manifest itself in inadequate planning, strategy and an over reliance on familiar structures while on the other, the group can often become paralysed through over analysis of their process.
The experiential learning reviews help the group to develop a vision of where they want to go and engender a willingness to openly confront issues, give each other mutual support and the will to succeed. Good team work is not just about cooperation, it needs a high degree of openness and support for innovation to flourish. This then is the world of experiential learning, that makes experiential learning effective.
The experiential learning experience usually ends with participants producing a SWOT analysis of their performance to share in their success and failures, forge a team working ethos, etc. This is followed by a team critique of performance in a number of key management processes, supported by evidence and how they could improve.
