Key Learning Areas
Key learning areas throughout the Jake saga cover problem solving, decision making, planning, time and resource management (materials and finance), team working (roles and behaviors), and effective communications, project control and coordination.
Whatever is your business or participant's function or level we can design an action centred learning event to satisfy all your experiential learning needs.
Goliath - a meteor on a collision course with earth. The international Strategic Defence Corporation need an advanced rocket fuel to launch a deep space nuclear strike - the SDC sponsors Jake Reynolds to lead a mission to recover the formulae.
Pobl Draig (Welsh Dragon People) - a fanatical religious terrorist organisation, being hunted by the Special Branch, kidnaps Jake Reynolds and seeks to sabotage the sponsored recovery mission.
Armageddon - A deadly virus stolen (by Pobl Draig? - who have now been joined by Lucas?) from a research centre where it was being used to pilot Genetic engineering. Special Branch recruits Jake (now released) and his team to help their investigation.
Every part of the trilogy has the potential to be broken down into stages to satisfy multiple learning groups.
The inaugural scenario - A Professor Lucas and his life long friend Jake Reynolds head a team that has, for a number of years, been working on a formulae for an advanced rocket fuel. Due to Government cutbacks the team were disbanded just as the research was drawing to a successful conclusion. The research, under an exchange agreement, was to be transferred to the USA and come under the administration of NASA.
Lucas made it known that he considered this move to be a betrayal of years of hard work by the British team and had fought strenuously to have the decision reversed. Despite efforts on his part the transfer was to go ahead. The Government had placed a 'D' notice on all information concerning the transfer which severely limited the action that Lucas could take. However, before the transfer could take place, a mysterious fire destroyed the research laboratory, in the remains a body was found, presumed to be that of Professor Lucas. Detailed forensic examination raised doubts as to the identity and no trace of the formulae or relevant data could be found. An extensive investigation conducted on both sides of the Atlantic led to the discovery of a secret consortium who it was suspected had a connection with Lucas. Despite massive enquires the investigation came to a dead end.
- a locket with a grid reference inside
- a cartridge case, inside is a piece of paper with a grid reference on
- some acetate sheets which if correctly positioned on a map of the area (not supplied) pinpoint three locations
- a note book which contains drawings of the inside of a security brief case, some unconnected jottings and a grid reference, and more
- a note to Jake Reynolds
- a canister with a screw top inside of which is a flowchart of locations
- other personal effects but no identification
The course participants return to their operations room at the Centre after having been given a copy of the safety rules, people / resources list and log sheets. They are told that they have now started an ongoing exercise which is self managed and has to be completed by a set-time (this project can be designed to range from three to five days!). The roles of trainers, instructors and Centre staff are explained and the times when they have to report into the Centre for sessions on theory input, project progress assessment, learning reflection and consideration of work based application, problem solving and meal times. Sleeping or drinking in the bar is not scheduled, i.e. this time has to be generated by effective use of resources realising timely progress!!
Participants are not aware that information found on the beach is part of a complex web of information which if correctly managed will ultimately lead them to the uncovering of an international plot on behalf of a consortium of businessmen to obtain the formulae and data. Their mission ends when the house that Lucas (yes, he is alive) is renting in Holyhead is raided and Lucas's briefcase containing many miscellaneous papers and objects is recovered. These are delivered to Jake Reynolds for verification.
Mission two starts with the realisation that the formulae is still missing and that the briefcase holds the secret to its location - Jake sponsors a highly trained recovery team! The mission becomes urgent when news of Goliath is released and the SDC's need for an advanced rocket fuel - the future of mankind is dependant upon the teams success!
Mission three starts with the kidnap of Jake by a fanatical religious terrorist group whilst on his way to Manchester airport to catch a flight to America with the formulae.
Mission four starts with Jake (having been rescued) being engaged by the special branch to help track down the terrorist group who held him captive when it is discovered that this group have stolen a deadly virus.
Mission five - the hunt for Lucas and so the story continues ad infinitum.
It is recommended that this programme is prefaced with a foundation day and followed up with a consolidation day. |
